What I Did After Leaving School
MAURICE DUNN

I started at HSB at Osborne Street in September 1953 and finished in January 1956 halfway through the third year having secured a job as a Junior Draughtsman with YEB in Driffield which kept me gong for about 8 years. I was then appointed as a surveyor doing profiling and setting out for power lines. In between I attended Hull Tech College for five or six years and obtained a Higher National in Electrical Engineering. In 1964 I was employed as a junior engineer and over a period of time climbed the ladder from surveyor to a Senior Authorised Engineer and spent the rest of my working life in that capacity which amounted to 40 years or thereabouts and enjoyed every minute of it working on all systems up to 66,000 volts. I was officially made redundant in April 1995 but was then asked to return on a part time basis which I did for a further 3 years.

Mike Worsey

1964 - 1972 Hollis (Hull) Ltd. Joined straight from school as an accounts clerk working on job and contract costing in the joinery department.

Progressed through various departments of this timber importing and manufacturing company and became assistant management accountant within the hardwood department.

1972 - 1984 Rediffusion (Yorkshire) Ltd. Joined in May 1972 as assistant management / financial accountant in the days before computers as we know them today. My role included among other things setting up TV accounting and recording controls, financial accounting, and other financial / management controls.

During 1980 I was promoted to Management Accountant and prepared budgets, installed a new computerised accounting system. The company was also acquiring other TV Rental companies in Yorkshire and I was part of a team preparing financial appraisals and integrating purchased companies into Rediffusion.

In mid 1982 I was appointed to a team installing a brand new all singing all dancing computerised accounting systems.

In mid 1983 I moved to Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire to become Management Accountant of Rediffusion consumer Electronics.

In July 1984 Rediffusion was acquired by Granada TV Rental and I moved to become Financial Control Manager at their head office in Bedford.

October 1987 - September 1991 was made an offer I couldn’t afford to refuse at Norwich and Peterborough Building Society as Management Accountant in Peterborough. The main role was budgets, installing / maintaining a new accounting system and assisting audit in improving accounting controls. A company restructure in September 1991 resulted in Redundancy.

October 1991 - January 2007 Initially I took a temporary role at Thomas Cook, Peterborough but this eventually became a permanent position and became a financial analyst preparing budgets, new management reporting systems and cash flows. During the time at Thomas Cook I was appointed a trouble shooter and moved around the company as required to resolve accounting issues and upgrading accounting systems. This meant spending many weeks and months in a number of cities around Europe including Dublin, Helsinki, Malta (for 3 years as Financial Controller) Rome, Paris, Brugge, Prague, and Amsterdam (for 12 months).

Part of the Thomas Cook business was sold to Travelex and this is where I finished my career, still travelling around Europe, when I volunteered for redundancy and retirement in January 2007.
